How popular is the IPL?

The popularity of the IPL cannot be overstated. In 2018, the final between Chennai Super Kings and Sun Risers Hyderabad saw 10 million concurrent users tune in to livestream the game, in what was a world record at the time.

In total, last year’s edition of the IPL had 462 million viewers tune in to watch all the action across television and internet-based platforms.

Star Sports India paid nearly 2.4 billion USD in 2017 to secure IPL television and digital rights for five years, or about 500 million USD for each season. The contract is up for renewal in 2022, and the eventual figure is likely to be even higher.

Predictions for the IPL

The upcoming edition of the IPL means it’s now in its 13th season. Last season’s winners Mumbai Indians will undoubtedly be looking to capitalize on their strong showing in past tournaments and come with a star-studded squad that includes the likes of Rohit Sharma and Lasith Malinga. Other heavyweight teams include the Mahenda Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captained by Virat Kohli, and the Rajasthan Royals.

However, IPL 2020 is anyone’s game. Newer teams such as Sun Risers Hyderabad are more than capable of springing a surprise as evidenced by their 2016 tournament triumph over the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

What’s for sure is that cricket aficionados are in for a treat. The IPL 2020 features a total of 60 games with non-stop entertainment over nearly two months.

Enjoy all the action!
