Unable to Connect: No TAP-Windows/TAP-Win32 Adapters on this System

If you see the following error message in your connection log:

Thu Apr 21 14:17:46 2016 There are no TAP-Windows adapters on this system. You should be able to create a TAP-Windows adapter by going to Start -> All Programs -> TAP-Windows -> Utilities -> Add a new TAP-Windows virtual ethernet adapter.

Disconnected with error: vpn process terminated unexpectedly
or
Thu Apr 21 14:17:46 2016 There are no TAP-Win32 adapters installed on this system.

Follow the instructions below based on the version of ExpressVPN you have installed.

Preliminary check: Please upgrade to the latest version of ExpressVPN (which contains the latest ExpressVPN TAP Driver) first. If you already have the latest version of ExpressVPN, please uninstall and then reinstall your app.

I am using…

ExpressVPN version 5.3 and later
ExpressVPN version 4.X and 5.0 – 5.2
ExpressVPN version 3.X


For ExpressVPN Version 5.3 and later

Run your ExpressVPN app installer (for ExpressVPN version 6.0) and click repair.

If you don’t have the installer, sign in to your account, click Set Up ExpressVPN, then download and run the latest version of ExpressVPN again.


For ExpressVPN Version 4.X and 5.0 – 5.2

Download and save this executable file: tap-windows-9.21.1.exe.

Click on the drop-down of the file and select Show in folder. You can also access your browser download history by pressing CTRL + J).

In the folder that opens, click on Run as Administrator to install with full administrative permissions.

The User Account Control box will appear. Click Yes to continue.

You will now see the TAP-Windows 9.21.1 Setup Wizard. Click Next > and follow the instructions.

After successfully installing the TAP-Win32 driver, check your Network Connections to ensure TAP-Windows Adapter V9 is enabled.

Note: there is no issue if there is a red cross in the icon.

Restart ExpressVPN and connect to a server location.

If you cannot connect to a server location after restarting ExpresVPN, re-install ExpressVPN. You do not need to uninstall the app first. Simply run the installation program again.


For ExpressVPN Version 3.X

Under Local Disk (C:) Program Files (x86)ExpressVPN > bin, locate the addtap file. Right-click the file, select Run as administrator, and accept all warnings.

When the process is completed. Check that the CMD prompt displays “Drivers installed successfully“.

Restart ExpressVPN and connect to a server location.

If you cannot connect to a server location after restarting ExpresVPN, re-install ExpressVPN. You do not need to uninstall the app first. Simply run the installation program again.
