Key storylines of the 2021 college football season

    • Is the Covid-19 weirdness behind us? The 2020 season had a very odd feel to it; power conferences like the Big Ten and Pac-12 joined late, some conferences didn’t play at all, and rosters were impacted on a weekly basis by Covid-related absences. And yet somehow, it all ended up with traditional powers Alabama and Ohio State in the championship game. Vaccination mandates vary widely among teams and conferences this season (but currently only three I-A teams are reporting a 100% vaccination rate); it will be interesting to see how Covid-19 factors into the 2021 season.
    • It’s the SEC vs. Everybody else. Big 12 powers Texas and Oklahoma sent shockwaves through the college football world in July when they decamped to join the SEC, which has now become a 16-team “superconference.” In response, the Big 10, ACC, and Pac-12 have formed an “alliance” to mutually ensure some financial stability and uphold certain academic standards. (It sure was a rough summer for the poor Big 12.) While the alliance will have little impact on the current season, it will certainly affect future schedules (men’s and women’s basketball are included in the deal as well) and TV contracts.
    • Show players the money. A landmark Supreme Court ruling caused the NCAA to enact a new Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy, allowing players to earn money for endorsement deals (although the enforcement and interpretation will vary by state). On a macro level, schools with top-tier programs and national exposure will likely attract even more talent now. For instance, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young—who is yet to start a game in his career—was offered one deal for “almost seven figures” according to his coach, Nick Saban. It will also be fascinating to see how juggling these deals and managing increasingly valuable social media accounts will impact individual players in the ultimate team sport.
