Windows 8 VPN Connection Guide
The easiest way to set up your connection is through the app. If you are unable to use your ExpressVPN app on Windows 8, you can manually set up your own ExpressVPN connection by following this guide.
Windows 8 VPN Pre-setup
Open the Welcome Email you received when you first signed up for ExpressVPN and click the link inside.
If you are unable to find the email, you can also log in to our website.
Once you’ve clicked the link in the welcome email or logged in to the website, click on the Set Up ExpressVPN link on the Active Subscriptions page.
Next, click on the section called Manual Configuration (PPTP and L2TP-IPSec). Here you can find the IPSec pre-shared key, your username, your password, and a list of ExpressVPN server addresses.
Download Windows 8 VPN Dialers
Now you can download the Windows Dialers button found at the bottom of the Manual Configuration section. This will give you a ZIP file called expressvpn_dialers.zip.
Remember to keep this browser window open as you’ll need this information to set up your VPN.
How to Configure Your Windows 8 VPN Dialer
You can find the zip files in your downloads folder. Right-click on the zip file, then click Extract All.
A pop-up window will open. Click Extract. Keep in mind this will not work if you are just viewing the contents. The ZIP file needs to be extracted.
Double-click on the unzipped ExpressVPN Dialers folder and click Open.
Click on the ExpressVPN Windows L2TP and click Open.
Next, click on Properties.
Now you have the option to leave the server address as is or copy and paste one of the VPN addresses from earlier.
After that’s done, click on the Security tab.
Make sure the Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-Chap v2) option is checked.
Click on Advanced Settings.
Choose Use preshared key for authentication and type in 12345678 into the Key box. Click OK.
Check everything matches the image below and click OK.
Select whichever server location you want and click Connect.
Now enter the Username and Password from your welcome email and click Connect.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully add Windows 8 dialers! Please note the steps above can also be used to connect while using either PPTP or SSTP protocols. We recommend trying L2TP, as PPTP offers minimal security. If you still have questions, please feel free to contact our Support team.
