This guide will show you what Smart Routing is and how to set up and modify Smart Routing rules on the ExpressVPN browser extension.

Note: Smart Routing is only available in Proxy Mode.

You can use smart routing to customize your ExpressVPN extension to fit your browsing habits. These shortcuts will be saved even if you close your browser and quit the extension.

With Smart Routing, you can define a set of rules to automatically connect to or disconnect the VPN to specific locations upon visiting certain websites. You set rules by entering specific website URLs or by selecting a country from which all localised URLs will be included in the rule. For example, if you select the United Kingdom, all websites ending in .co.uk will be included in your rule.

How to set up a Smart Routing rule

To set up a Smart Routing rule:

  1. Open the ExpressVPN browser extension.
  2. Click Menu icon..
  3. Click Smart routing.
  4. Click + ADD RULE.

From here, you can set up a smart routing rule either by URL or by country:

BY URL

  1. Click BY URL.
  2. In the Website URL field, enter the website URL you want to set up the rule for.
  3. Next, you can decide whether your chosen website automatically connects to a proxy location, or whether you want the proxy disabled when visiting that particular website:
    • If you want to automatically connect to a proxy location every time you visit your chosen website, click the Choose a Proxy Location field to select a proxy location to automatically connect to.
    • If you do not want to use the proxy when visiting your chosen website, click Disable proxy.
  4. Click Save.

BY COUNTRY

  1. Click BY COUNTRY.
  2. Click the When visiting websites from field to select your country of choice.
  3. Next, you can choose whether you want to automatically connect to a proxy location when visiting websites from your chosen country, or whether you want the proxy disabled when visiting websites from that country:
    1. If you want to automatically connect to a proxy location every time you visit your chosen website, click the Choose a Proxy Location field to select a proxy location to automatically connect to.
    2. If you do not want to use the proxy when visiting your chosen website, click Disable proxy.
  4. Click Save.

How to modify smart routing rules

Once you have set up a smart routing rule, you have several options by which to modify it. You can:

Editing a smart routing rule

To edit an existing rule:

  1. Open the ExpressVPN browser extension.
  2. Click Menu icon..
  3. Click Smart routing.
  4. Click the Pen icon next to the rule you want to edit.
  5. Edit your rule, then click Save.

Pausing a smart routing rule

Pausing a smart routing rule will disable it without deleting it entirely. To pause a rule:

  1. Open the ExpressVPN browser extension.
  2. Click Menu icon..
  3. Click Smart routing.
  4. Click the Pause icon next to the rule you want to pause.

The rule will now be paused. To re-enable the rule:

  1. Open the ExpressVPN browser extension.
  2. Click Menu icon..
  3. Click Smart routing.
  4. Click the Play icon next to the rule you want to re-enable.

Deleting a smart routing rule

To delete a smart routing rule:

  1. Open the ExpressVPN browser extension.
  2. Click Menu icon..
  3. Click Smart routing.
  4. Click the Pen icon next to the rule you want to edit.
  5. Click the Trash icon to delete the rule.
