If your internet stops working after disconnecting from ExpressVPN, it is usually caused by either the Internet Kill Switch or an issue with your DNS settings.

Internet Kill Switch is enabled

If you are unable to access the internet when disconnected from ExpressVPN, you might have set the Internet Kill Switch to Enable at all times. This is the advanced kill switch mode in the Windows app, which blocks all internet traffic unless the VPN is active, even if you intentionally disconnect.

To update your Internet Kill Switch settings on Windows:

  1. Go to the Profile tab and under Settings, click Internet Kill Switch.The Profile tab in the ExpressVPN app for Windows, with the "Internet Kill Switch" option highlighted.

  3. Your internet connection should now work as normal after you disconnect from the VPN.

DNS settings were not restored

In some cases, your DNS settings may not be fully restored after disconnecting from ExpressVPN, which can prevent websites from loading even when your internet connection is active.

To reset your DNS settings manually:

  1. In the search bar, search for Control Panel” and click to open it.The Control Panel app in search results on Windows.

  5. Right-click your active connection, then click Properties.The "Properties" option on the active Wi-Fi connection on Windows.

  8. Click OK > OK.

Repeat these steps for all of your remaining network connections.
