Caller Identification is currently only available for Android users in the U.S. with an active Express Pro subscription.

Caller Identification is a feature in ExpressVPN’s Identity Defender suite that helps protect you from spam and scam calls. It can identify suspicious callers and either warn you or block them entirely based on your protection settings.

Note: This feature covers calls that come in over your mobile network. It does not currently cover VoIP calls via services such as WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram.

How to get Caller Identification

Caller Identification is available to Express Pro subscribers in the U.S. It’s part of the Identity Defender service and is currently available only on Android.

To sign up for and use Caller Identification:

  1. Go to the ExpressVPN order page and choose Express Pro.
  2. Select Get Express Pro to proceed.
  3. Complete your order by entering your email address and payment details. You’ll now have access to Identity Defender and the Caller Identification feature as part of your ExpressVPN subscription.
  4. Download and install the Identity Defender app on your Android device.

How to set up Caller Identification

Note: You must set Identity Defender as your default caller ID and spam app for Caller Identification to work. Until you enable this setting, Identity Defender cannot screen calls before your phone rings. You’ll be prompted to enable it using the process below.
  1. Open the Identity Defender app on your Android.
  2. You should see a “New feature available” pop-up for Caller Identification. Tap Get Started.New feature available pop-up with the Get Started button highlighted.

  8. Choose whether you want Identity Defender to access your contacts. This helps prevent calls from people you know from being flagged as spam or scams:
    • Tap Allow Contacts to enable this option. On the next permission pop-up, tap Allow.

How to manage Caller Identification settings

You can turn call protection on or off, change your protection level, and review blocked numbers in the Identity Defender app.

  1. In Identity Defender, tap Caller ID.Identity Defender home screen with Caller ID highlighted.
  2. You will see the following settings and information:
    • Call Protection: Turn call protection on or off. This section also shows the number of calls screened and spam warnings in the last 7 days.Caller Identification settings with the Call Protection toggle and recent call activity highlighted.
    • Protection level: Choose what happens when a call looks suspicious:
      • Warn me about spam and scams: Every call still rings. Identity Defender labels suspicious calls so you can decide whether to answer.
      • Block reported spam and scams: Silences calls known as spam or scams. Other calls still ring and are labeled when suspicious.
      • Block all suspected spam and scams: Blocks all calls that Identity Defender identifies as potential spam or scams, including those that have not been widely reported.
