This tutorial will teach you how to setup your ExpressVPN Router App on the Linksys WRT1200ACLinksys WRT1900AC(S), and Linksys WRT3200ACM. If you need help to figure out which model you’re using, please see this troubleshooting guide.

For non-Linksys routers, please see instructions for other router models.

NOTE: Use this tutorial only if you purchased your router through flashrouters.com. Otherwise, see instructions on purchasing and setting up the Linksys WRT1200ACinstructions on purchasing and setting up the Linksys WRT1900AC(S), or instructions on purchasing and setting up the Linksys WRT3200ACM.

Before setting up your router, check that you have the following items:

Linksys WRT1200AC: 1 router, 2 antennas, 1 network cable, and 1 power cable

Step 1: Physical Setup

Connect the antennas to the back of the router (see the image above).

Plug the router to a power outlet and verify that the power switch at the back of the router is set to ON.

Step 2: Connect router to Internet

Connect one end of the Internet cable to the yellow INTERNET port on the back of the router (see the image above).

  • If  you are using this router as your only (primary) router: connect the other end of the internet cable to your modem
    (also, see Step 5 below)
  • If you are using this router as a secondary router: connect the other end of the internet cable to your current router
    (No Ports? if there are no available ports on your current router, unplug a device you want to go through VPN, and use that now empty port to plug in the ExpressVPN Router. After completing setup, plug that device into your ExpressVPN router)

Wait until the power and internet lights on the front of the router are solid bars.

Step 3: Access the router using Wi-Fi or cable

Connect (from your computer or phone) to the secure wireless network name found on the bottom of the router. This will be named Wireless Network/Réseau sans fil. Select the option to automatically connect in future.

Enter the password, found at the bottom of your router, labeled Wireless Password/Mot de passe du réseau.

OPTIONAL: In the Wi-Fi panel, remove other ‘Preferred’ (Mac) or ‘Automatic’ (Windows) Wi-Fi networks. This ensures your device only connects to the secure ExpressVPN Router for all internet activities.

NOTE: You will not have VPN secured internet setup until you complete step 5 below.

Step 4: Go to router admin page

log-in-router-siteAccess www.expressvpnrouter.com in your web browser (see the image above).  If the URL does not work – try entering 192.168.42.1 in the address bar instead.

Enter the username and password found on the setup instructions sheet.

Step 5: Connect router to Internet service provider

If you are using the ExpressVPN Router as your only router (i.e. you are replacing your current router OR setting up ExpressVPN router as your only router which is plugged directly into your modem) then you must do this extra step to connect the router to your internet provider. There is no need to do this if you are ADDING the ExpressVPN Router as an additional router.

To connect to your modem:

switch-protocolAlong the top menu, go to the Network tab (next to VPN tab).

In the sidebar menu, select Interfaces, and from sub-menu select WAN (see the screenshot above).

Change the protocol to the specifications of your Internet service provider (ISP). Usually, this involves changing the protocol (e.g. from DHCP to PPPoE) and entering a username and password. Click switch protocol.

Once complete, return to the VPN tab and continue to next step.

Step 6: Activate ExpressVPN

If you have not activated your ExpressVPN account, sign in to your account, click Set Up ExpressVPN, and copy your 23 digit ExpressVPN activation code.

Wait a few seconds while your ExpressVPN Router connects to the top recommended VPN location.

You can change locations easily by clicking on “Select Another Location”.

NOTE: all devices connected to ExpressVPN will appear to be from your connected country.

Step 7: Connect your devices

All devices connected to the Internet via your ExpressVPN router (either through cable or Wi-Fi) will have its traffic tunneled through a secure VPN.

To connect any device to the VPN, plug its network cable into the ExpressVPN router or connect the device to the ExpressVPN router’s Wi-Fi. The sign in details are the same as in Step 3 above.

You can also change the VPN server location you are connected to or disconnect a device connected to the router by logging into www.expressvpnrouter.com.
