How to set up the ExpressVPN app on Nvidia Shield using APK files

This article will show you how to set up ExpressVPN on an Nvidia Shield using an APK file. For this tutorial, you’ll need an Nvidia Shield with a controller, a computer, a USB flash drive, and an ExpressVPN subscription.

Download the ExpressVPN app APK

To begin, make sure your USB flash drive is plugged into your computer. Visit the ExpressVPN website and sign in to your account.

Once you’ve clicked the link in the welcome email or signed in to the website, click on Set Up on More Devices.

On the next page, select Android, followed by Download APK.

When the download is complete, move the APK file onto your flash drive. Then eject the flash drive from your computer.

Install the ExpressVPN app

Switch on your Nvidia Shield, but don’t plug in your flash drive yet. You will now enable your device to install apps from unknown sources.

Before proceeding, make sure your Nvidia controller is plugged into the Nvidia shield.

Go to Settings, followed by Security and restrictions.

The first toggle should read Unknown sources. If it’s not already set to the right, set it to the right. A warning will appear. Press OK.

Now you’ll need a way to access the APK file on your thumb drive. You can access your flash drive through the “ES File Explorer File Manager” app from the Google Play Store. To get the file explorer app, return to your Nvidia Shield’s home screen and open the Google Play store.

Find ES File Explorer File Manager.

Select Install, followed by Accept.

When the installation finishes, plug your thumb drive into the Nvidia Shield. A pop-up should appear asking if you’d like to open it with ES File Explorer. Select OK.

Select your USB drive by expanding Local and then selecting the USB.

Open the USB storage file and select the ExpressVPN APK file you downloaded earlier.

Select Install. Select Install again. When the installation finishes, select Open.

Use the right joystick on the Nvidia Controller to navigate the app. First we’ll need to activate your VPN account. Select Log In and enter your ExpressVPN credentials.

Use the directional pad to select the appropriate characters and the red B button to close the character-selection pane. Select Log In after you’ve entered your email and password.

Now you can configure your VPN. Select OK using the joystick, and then use the directional pad to select OK again. You can use the joystick for the rest of the tutorial. Select Allow if you want to share anonymous connection analytics with ExpressVPN.

Connect to the VPN

You’re ready to connect to ExpressVPN. To connect instantly, simply click on the big on button to connect to your Smart Location.

The Smart Location is the server ExpressVPN thinks will give you the best speed and stability.

If you want to change VPN server locations, click Choose Location. You can only choose locations while disconnected from the VPN.

To disconnect, simply click the on button again.

Uninstall the ExpressVPN app

After you leave the ExpressVPN app, you can return to it at any time by navigating to the App folder in ES File Explorer, selecting the app, and selecting Open.

You can also use ES File Explorer to uninstall ExpressVPN. Select the app and uninstall it.
