Every now and then, you may run into connection issues on your Android device. Please refer to your actual error and follow the corresponding resolution steps.

You can search for your error on this page by hitting Control + F (Windows) or Command + F (Mac) and then typing in the error message.


Error 1:

Opening tun interface failed badly. Error: Cannot create interface
On some custom ICS images the permission on /dev/tun might be wrong, or the tun module might be missing completely. For CM9 images try the fix ownership option under general settings.

or:

Sorry, your device is missing a component called the "TUN driver". Without this, ExpressVPN likely will not be able to connect successfully. Please tap "Learn More" below for our latest information on how to fix this problem.

Resolution:

  1. Recommended: Connect manually to our gateways by configuring your Android settings. Here are the setup instructions.
    Note: this only applies to paid subscriptions and not for trial subscriptions. There is no manual setup available for trial accounts.
  2. Install a compatible TUN driver for your device. Note: this is only applicable for rooted devices.
  3. Upgrade your device to the latest OS release.
  4. Try using the ExpressVPN App on another Android device.

Error 2:
Opening tun interface failed badly.
Error: command '11192 interface fwmark rule add tun0' failed with '400 11192 Failed to add fwmark rule (Device or resource busy)'

This error message usually occurs when the needed interface is not responding.

Resolution: Reboot your device and try connecting to an ExpressVPN server location afterwards.

Error 3:
HTTP proxy support only works for TCP based connections
MGMT:Got unrecognized line from management:ERROR: proxy command failed

This error message usually occurs if your network has proxy setup or UDP ports are blocked on your network.

Resolution: Change your VPN protocol from UDP to TCP. Instructions for changing your VPN protocol can be found here.

Error 4:
P:write UDP [ECONNREFUSED]: Operation not permitted (code=1)

This error message is usually due to your Android device’s battery/energy-saving features limiting the VPN connection’s activities. Common effects are disconnection or stability issues.

Resolution:

  1. Go to your Android device’s Settings.
  2. Select Battery from the Device settings list.
  3. Tap on Battery optimization (or App optimization, per your device)
  4. Select All apps from the drop-down menu (i.e. by default, Not Optimized is selected).
  5. Scroll down and find and select ExpressVPN from the listed applications.
  6. Select Don’t optimize and then tap on Done.
  7. Re-launch ExpressVPN, and then try connecting again to the VPN.

Error 5:
ERROR: Cannot open TUN

Resolution:

  1. Uninstall ExpressVPN from your device.
  2. Download the ExpressVPN app for Android again. You can do so by accessing your ExpressVPN welcome email or by downloading the app here.
  3. Set up your app.
  4. Start the app and connect to an ExpressVPN server location.

Error 6: Cannot connect after upgrading Android OS

Some users can have trouble connecting to ExpressVPN after upgrading from Android 4 (Jelly Bean or KitKat) to Android 5 (Lollipop), 6 (Marshmallow)7 (Nougat), or 8 (Oreo).

Resolution:

  1. Power off your device.
  2. Turn on your device.
  3. Connect to a ExpressVPN server location.
  4. Tap OK when prompted by the Connection Request dialog box.

Error 7: Unexpected disconnects when using battery saver

Some users may experience connection issues with the ExpressVPN app. Possible issues include:

  • Unexpected VPN disconnections
  • Failure to connect automatically on device startup (even if Connect on Android startup is enabled)

To resolve these issues, you can disable battery saving for ExpressVPN.

If you’re on a Samsung Android device:

  1. Go to SettingsAppsExpressVPN Battery Optimise battery usage
  2. Toggle power saving for ExpressVPN off

If you’re on a OnePlus device:

  1. Go to System Settings > Apps > Gear Icon > Special Access > Battery Optimization
  2. Disable power saving for ExpressVPN

Alternatively:

  1. Go to Phone Settings > Battery > Battery optimization
  2. Switch to the All apps list. From the dropdown at the top, tap on ExpressVPNDon’t optimize

If you’re on another Android device:

  1. Go to SettingsApp & notifications > Special access Ignore battery optimisation. You can also use your device’s built-in search function to find this menu.
  2. Select ExpressVPN. If you don’t see ExpressVPN, make sure you are using the All apps view instead of the Not optimised view.
  3. Select Allow (or the option that ensures ExpressVPN is not optimized). ExpressVPN will now be exempt from battery-saving rules on your device.

Error 8: Disconnection from Android system error

Occasionally, you may encounter a “VPN Disconnected” screen. This is commonly caused by other VPN apps installed on your device, even when they are not currently being used.

On most Android devices:

  1. Go to Network & internet > VPN (You can also search for “VPN” in your system settings)
  2. Tap on the gear icon next to each non-ExpressVPN VPN app
  3. Tap Forget VPN

If you’re on a Samsung Android device:

  1. Go to Connections > More connection settings > VPN (You can also search for “VPN” in your system settings)
  2. Tap on the gear icon next to each non-ExpressVPN VPN app
  3. Tap Delete VPN profile
