Connecting to ExpressVPN in China

1. Make sure you are using the latest versions of the ExpressVPN apps

2. Make sure the protocol in your ExpressVPN app is set to Automatic

  1. Open the ExpressVPN app
  2. Click the menu
  3. Open Options or Preferences
  4. Select Protocol
  5. Select Automatic

Router users: See below for instructions on setting the protocol to “Automatic” on your ExpressVPN router app

3. Wait for your app to complete its connection request

At times, connecting may take longer than usual. Please let your app finish a connection attempt before retrying, only doing so after your app indicates that it is unable to connect.

4. Try connecting to one of these server locations:

  • Hong Kong - 1
  • Hong Kong - 4
  • Hong Kong - 5
  • Japan - Tokyo - 1
  • Singapore - Marina Bay
  • UK - Wembley
  • USA - Los Angeles - 4
  • USA - Los Angeles - 5

Protocol selection in the ExpressVPN router app:

Make sure the protocol in your ExpressVPN router app is set to Automatic

  1. Connect to your ExpressVPN router (via Wi-Fi or cable)
  2. Go to and log in
  3. In the VPN tab of the router dashboard, click VPN Options
  4. Under VPN Protocol, select Automatic
