Find your ExpressVPN account credentials
To begin, sign in to your ExpressVPN account.
Once you’ve clicked the link in the welcome email or signed in to the website, click on Set Up on More Devices.
Click on Manual Config on the left side of the screen and then select PPTP & L2TP/IPsec on the right. This will show you your username, password, and a list of server addresses around the world.
Please note this information as you will need it to configure your Xiaomi router.

Configure your Xiaomi router with the VPN
Access your router’s control panel by visiting miwifi.com. If that does not work, see how to find your router’s default gateway.
If this is your first time signing in, enter a password of your choice.
Click on Advanced > VPN.
Click on Add service. Fill in the details as follows:
- Name: something for you to remember the connection by
- Protocol type: L2TP
- Server: paste the ExpressVPN server name you found above
- Username: paste the ExpressVPN manual config username you found above
- Password: paste the ExpressVPN manual config password you found above
Click Save.

Connect to the VPN server
You will see your newly created VPN connection (and any existing ones) listed under VPN.
Click Connect and wait for the connection to be established.
After the connection is established, check your IP to ensure you are connected to the VPN via your router.

Disconnect from the VPN server
To disconnect from the VPN server, simply click Disconnect and wait for the connection to be terminated.
Optional: If you want your router to connect to the VPN when it is on, check the box next to Connect automatically when the device is on.
