This guide will show you how to reset your ExpressVPN router to the original firmware.

Before you start:  Make sure you have the original router firmware downloaded. You can find the firmware by visiting the official Asus, Linksys, and Netgear websites.

Go to In the sidebar, go to Advanced Settings > Software Update.

Click on "Software Update".

Click on Choose file and select the firmware file.

Click to select the firmware.

Click Update Now.

Click "Update Now" to flash to the new firmware.

Wait a moment while the firmware is upgrading. You will be taken back to the dashboard when the process has been completed.

I’ve “bricked” my router

In the unlikely event that your router stops responding during the flashing process:

  1. Power on your router.
  2. Keep it on for 8 seconds.
  3. Turn off the router.
  4. Repeat the above three more times.

ExpressVPN router v1

Go to using the router’s Wi-Fi connection. On the page, select System and then Backup / Flash Firmware.


Scroll down to Flash new firmware image and uncheck the box next to Keep settings.

Click Choose File and upload the original Linksys firmware. You can find the original firmware file by visiting and searching for your model name.

Click Flash image… and then Proceed.

Note: If you are about to sell or give the router away, you are recommended to first flash the router a second time using the Linksys UI and then reset the router to factory defaults to wipe out any custom settings.

Go to using the router’s Wi-Fi connection. On the page, select Administration and then Firmware Upgrade.

In the drop-down menu, select Reset to Default settings and find the original Asus or Netgear firmware to flash to.

Important: Make sure you’re downloading and using the correct firmware for your router model.

Click Upgrade and wait while the firmware is uploaded. You will be asked to verify the file flashing. Click Proceed to continue.

When the flash is complete, you will be notified that you are not connected to the router. This is normal. Connect to the Asus or Netgear router’s Wi-Fi and set your router login information if prompted.

You should have full internet access now. If you have trouble accessing your router dashboard later, see instructions on how to find your router’s default gateway.
