This troubleshooting guide is for Mac users who cannot install the ExpressVPN app. Users facing this error should see:mac installation failed

To confirm the error, open using spotlight search. You should see a message in your install log along the following lines:Oct 17 14:13:32 your-MacBook-Pro installd[491]: PackageKit: Install Failed: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=1 "Operation not permitted" UserInfo={NSFilePath=/private/tmp/PKInstallSandbox.XXXXXX} {
NSFilePath = "/private/tmp/PKInstallSandbox.XXXXXX";

Search for PackageKit: Install Failed: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=1 "Operation not permitted”
If you see this message, the issue is caused by your Mac having incorrect permissions for the temp folder. The steps below will reset them back to normal:

  1. Restart the computer and then hold down Command-R after the chime.
  2. Choose Terminal from the Utilities menu.
  3. Run csrutil disable
  4. Restart the computer again.
  5. Open Terminal and run the following commands:sudo chmod 1777 /tmp;thensudo chflags -R norestricted /private/tmp/;
  6. Re-enable System Integrity Protection by rebooting the computer, holding down Command-R, choosing Utilities > Terminal, and running csrutil enable
  7. Restart the computer a final time.
  8. Launch the ExpressVPN app installer again.
