This guide will show you how to manually configure your Mac device with other DNS server addresses.

When connected to ExpressVPN, your device runs DNS queries using ExpressVPN’s DNS servers. These servers are secure and help prevent DNS leaks. If you do not want to use ExpressVPN’s DNS servers, you can configure your device to use other DNS server addresses.

Important: To use other DNS server addresses, you will need to be disconnected from ExpressVPN. Using a third-party DNS service may cause DNS leaks. To avoid DNS leaks, stay connected to ExpressVPN.

To configure your Mac with other DNS server addresses:

  1. On your Mac, select "Apple" icon., then select System Preferences… > Network.
    Select “Network.”
  2. In the sidebar, select the connection for which you want to change the DNS server settings. Click Advanced…
Select your current internet connection, then click “Advanced.”
  3. Select the DNS tab.
  4. Click Add icon. and enter the DNS server addresses you want to use. (You can use and These are secure OpenDNS’s DNS servers.)
Enter the DNS server addresses of your choice.
  5. Click OK > Apply.

A note about PPPoE

If you are connecting to your ISP via a PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) connection, set the DNS servers on the PPPoE connection itself, then restart your computer for the DNS settings to take effect.
