Bypass NHL.TV blackouts and stream all hockey games

While NHL.TV is great for watching live games, but you’ll still need to worry about blackouts. That’s because regional markets have sole broadcasting rights, so some games may not be available online in your area until 48 hours after a game is televised.

What happened in the NHL offseason?

The 2020 free agent class was long on useful players, but short on franchise-changers. Only four players topped 20 million USD on their contracts (Alex Pietrangelo, Torey Krug, Jacob Markström and T.J. Brodie). Of those four only Pietrangelo and Krug would be classified as stars, and the latter went to replace the former with the St. Louis Blues.

Perhaps the most interesting name to change teams was Taylor Hall, who was the league’s most valuable player in 2017-18. Hall is still just 28 and although his last two seasons haven’t gone as planned, he can reset his market if he excels with the Buffalo Sabres. At 8 million USD for one year, his contract could be a significant bargain for Buffalo. Other big names to switch teams include Henrik Lundqvist, Joe Thornton, and Mikko Koivu, but all three veterans are well past their primes and figure to play smaller roles on contending teams as they chase elusive Stanley Cup rings.

On the trade front, it was a relatively quiet offseason with the biggest deal involving the Montreal Canadiens moving their former top-line center Max Domi and a draft pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Josh Anderson. The move might indicate a preference for size over skill, which is a dubious strategy in the modern NHL. Other than that, there were a number of minor trades, all of which you can find here, but nothing that radically altered the competitive landscape.

Who will be the Stanley Cup winner in 2021?

The Tampa Bay Lightning are an easy team to like for a Stanley Cup repeat considering they combine elite forward talent with the league’s most dynamic goaltender in Andrei Vasilevskiy. Nipping at their heels will be the Vegas Golden Knights, who added Pietrangelo to an already-stacked roster, and the Colorado Avalanche, whose core of Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar is as dangerous as they come. Add in their underrated defensemen, and there’s a reason they’re considered the favorites by bookmakers.

Outside of those three are a jumble of teams that could be in the mix. The Boston Bruins’ first line alone makes them dangerous in the playoffs, the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins are battle-tested, and it’s easy to forget the Philadelphia Flyers earned the Eastern Conference’s top seed last season. Even the Toronto Maple Leafs have a chance to break their 53-year title drought thanks to an improved defense corps and a more balanced lineup. The NHL is always one of the most difficult leagues to project, and that’s not going to change this year.

What are the NHL odds for next season?

It might be a little early to start laying down your bets, especially when we don’t know exactly how the league’s current structure will be altered by a Canadian division. That said, these are where the odds on all the contenders stand now, according to Odds Shark, and there might be a line below that appeals to you:

TeamOdds
Colorado Avalanche+650
Tampa Bay Lightning+700

Washington Capitals +1600
Pittsburgh Penguins+1800
St. Louis Blues+2000
Vancouver Canucks+2000
